El 4 de noviembre de 1989, Orlando Magic debutaba en la NBA. Parte de la expansión de finales de la división, en escasamente dos primaveras cuatro nuevas franquicias habían llegado a la NBA, inmediato a Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat y Minnesota Timberwolves. La primera vencimiento de su historia llegó delante los Knicks, en el segundo duelo, aunque esa temporada no consiguieron muchas más: 18-64 fue el récord. Sus tres primeros primaveras se combinaron para escasamente 70 triunfos y 176 derrotas (28.8% de victorias), pero la historia de la franquicia cambió el 17 de mayo de 1992. Esa tinieblas, la franquicia conseguía el #1 del próximo draft. Esa tinieblas empezaba la historia de Shaquille O’Neal en Orlando, una que cierra su ciclo esta mañana.
Shaq impactó desde el primer día. El equipo ganó 20 partidos más en su año de novato, con O’Neal llevándose el premio al Rookie del Año, siendo All Star, como Michael Jordan una división antes, y quedándose fielmente a un desempate de poner playoff. El premio por no conseguirlo fue otro pick #1, que convirtieron en Penny Hardaway. Y ahora sí, Orlando empezó una era de dominio en el sureste de la NBA. Fueron solo cuatro primaveras, una relación corta, pero intensa en la que los Magic jugaron unas finales delante Hakeem Olajuwon y los Rockets, y perdieron unas finales del Este contra los Bulls de las 72 victorias en 1996. En los dos casos se llevaron un 4-0 que dejó secuelas. Solo ellos pudieron evitar el primer anillo de Shaq, y de la franquicia, que todavía no ha llegado.
Cuatro primaveras en los que Shaq promedió 27,2 puntos, 12,5 rebotes, 2,8 tapones y 2,4 asistencias. Solo Tracy McGrady metió más puntos por partido; solo Dwight Howard bajó más rebotes por tinieblas. En la historia de la franquicia es segundo en tapones, tercero en rebotes y sexto en puntos pese a estar fuera del top-10 en minutos (#14) y partidos jugados (#21). Tiene el segundo mejor porcentaje de tiro (leve 300) tras Bo Outlaw y fue con Orlando que metió el único triple de su carrera, el 16 de febrero de 1996, delante Milwaukee. Con los Magic consiguió 226 dobles-dobles en 295 partidos de temporada regular y 25 en 26 durante los playoffs. Y por eso su camiseta será la primera en ser retirada por los Orlando Magic, porque Shaq fue su primer gran nombre.
Aunque para Shaq no será tan singular como la primera vez, pues ya tiene el número retirado en Los Angeles Lakers y Miami Heat. O’Neal se convertirá en el segundo atleta en tener su dorsal retirado en tres franquicias que ha jugado, como Wilt Chamberlain con el #13 colgado en los pabellones de Warriors, Sixers y Lakers. Con la diferencia de que Shaq tiene el #32 en las franquicias de Florida y el #34 en el Crypto Arena. Adicionalmente de las tres franquicias NBA, el dorsal de Shaq ha sido retirado en su universidad, LSU, y su instituto, Robert G. Cole. Como Shaq y Wilt, Pete Maravich todavía tiene su camiseta retirada en tres equipos NBA, aunque nunca jugó para New Orleans Pelicans (sí en New Orleans, pero con los Jazz). Michael Jordan todavía tiene retirado el #23 en Miami, franquicia para la que nunca jugó.
Tras dejar Orlando, O’Neal consiguió percibir cuatro anillos de la NBA, tres seguidos en Los Angeles, de 2000 a 2002, y otro en Miami en 2006 inmediato a Dwayne Wade. En sus 19 primaveras de carrera, Shaquille O’Neal consiguió 28,596 puntos (#8 en la historia), 13,099 rebotes (#15) y 2,732 tapones (#8). Solo cuatro jugadores están en el selecto reunión de 25,000 puntos, 10,000 rebotes y 2,500 tapones, incluyendo a Shaq: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tim Duncan y Hakeem Olajuwon. Fue tres veces MVP de las finales y otra de la temporada regular, 15 veces All Star (cuatro con Orlando y 14 veces más All NBA, mayor anotador de la NBA y es miembro del Salón de la Éxito desde 2014. Y desde esta tinieblas, el primer atleta en tener la camiseta retirada en el Kia Center, hogar de sus Orlando Magic.
