Durante la primera período de este siglo, se vivió en el fútbol africano una rivalidad deportiva que elevó el seguimiento de sus competiciones de selecciones por encima de lo habitual. La protagonizaron Camerún y Costa de Marfil. El origen de aquel antagonismo se encuentra en la etapa de clasificación para el Mundial de Alemania de 2006. Samuel Etoo y Didier Drogba eran, indiscutiblemente, los dos mejores jugadores del continente, y por otra parte estaban considerados como auténticas estrellas a nivel completo. Que uno de los dos se fuera a salir sin participar en la Copa del Mundo hizo que aquella etapa tuviera una repercusión mediática que nunca antiguamente ni posteriormente volvió a alcanzar. La liguilla acabó con el famosísimo penalti que Pierre Womé falló en presencia de Egipto en el minuto 95 del final partido. Si lo hubiese convertido, Camerún se habría clasificado. Pero lo mandó al palo, y de esta guisa Costa de Marfil accedió a su primer Mundial.
De aquella coexistentes dorada del fútbol marfileño, que disputó los Mundiales de 2006, 2010 y 2014 y ganó la Copa de África de 2015, los nombres más famosos fueron los de Drogba, los hermanos Kolo y Yaya Touré, Didier Zokora, Emmanuel Eboué, Salomon y Bonaventure Kalou, Romaric o Gervinho. Menos recordado es Emerse Faé, que sólo formó parte de la convocatoria en los primeros torneos de aquella época gloriosa pero que tuvo una carrera como medio más que prudente en la primera división francesa. Faé lleva abriles queriendo ser monitor y ha dirigido a equipos en las categorías inferiores del Niza y del Clermont. Empezó esta Copa de África, la que se disputa en su país, como asistente del francés Jean-Louis Gasset. La pésima etapa de grupos del conjunto huésped provocó el cese del galo, que fue destituido antiguamente de saberse si Costa de Marfil se clasificaba para octavos de final como uno de los cuatro mejores terceros de peña. La carambola se dio, y posteriormente de que la asociación intentara fichar a Hervé Renard y no lo consiguiera, Faé se vio dirigiendo a su país como seleccionador definitivo. De momento ya ha eliminado a Senegal y a Mali y está en semifinales. Si completa la gesta, su estreno como técnico profesional será irrepetible.
