El equipo Caja Rural-Seguros RGA inicia este fin de semana su decimoquinto curso dentro de la categoría profesional en busca de su victoria número 100 con cinco caras nuevas en una plantilla plagada de juventud e ilusión.
La escuadra navarra afronta un nuevo año tras un 2023 brillante, como demuestran los dieciséis triunfos conseguidos a lo largo de la pasada temporada con el venezolano Ourluis Aular (7) y el portugués Irui Leitao (5) como principales armas.
Las plantillas de Caja Rural-Seguros RGA y Filial Caja Rural-Alea celebraron este miércoles en el Palacio Baluarte de Pamplona su puesta de largo previa al inicio de la nueva temporada. Se rindió homenaje a Txomin Perurena, figura muy ligada a la entidad, primero como corredor y, después, como director deportivo.
La labor formativa para brindar oportunidades continúa siendo el objetivo primordial. Dos datos avalan y refuerzan esa idea: con Jon Barrenetxea rumbo a Movistar son ya 27 los ciclistas con pasado en la formación verde que han alcanzado el WorldTour, convirtiéndose en el ProTeam con el número más elevado.
Además, otros cuatro corredores procedentes del filial se estrenan este año como profesionales: Samuel Fernández, Julen Arriolabengoa, Thomas Silva y Jaume Guardeño. El prometedor australiano Sebastian Berwick completa el apartado de altas en un grupo repleto de talento en el que doce de sus veintidós corredores no superan los 25 años.
El director del equipo, José Miguel Fernández, se mostró satisfecho de la última temporada: “Debemos sentirnos bien por el trabajo realizado, pero lo que destacaría por encima de todo es la capacidad de darle la vuelta al mal inicio de año, entre lesiones, enfermedades y problemas que nos hicieron empezar con mal pie”.
En números, el Caja Rural acumula 2.164 días de competición en 29 países diferentes, sumando un total de 99 victorias. Las primeras oportunidades para alcanzar ese triunfo centenario llegarán este mismo fin de semana con el debut del equipo en la Clásica de la Comunidad Valenciana y el novedoso Gran Premio Castellón, para enlazar a continuación con los tradicionales trofeos de la Challenge de Mallorca y el Gran Premio de la Marsellesa en Francia.
De sus nuevas caras, Hernández ha indicado que se han reforzado “bien, con Berwick como corredor joven pero que nos debe aportar mucho. Además, los ciclistas que pasan del amateur motivan, ilusionan y pienso que se van a adaptar rápido a la categoría”.
Además de ganar carreras y sumar puntos en UCI, el objetivo vuelve a ser estar en La Vuelta: “Las invitaciones están caras, no sabemos qué va a pasar, pero ese tiene que ser siempre el objetivo. Además, tenemos que centrarnos más en las clásicas y las pruebas de un día, donde sabemos que hay más puntos a repartir”.
El equipo se compone por 12 ciclistas españoles: Julen Arriolabengoa (2001), Abel Balderstone (2000), Fernando Barceló (1996), Josu Etxeberria (2000), Samuel Fernández (2003), David González (1996), Jaume Guardeño (2003), Joseba López (2000), Jokin Murguialday (2000), Joel Nicolau (1997), Eduard Prades (1987) y Gorka Sorarrain (1996).
El resto lo componen los extranjeros Orluis Aular (Venezuela), Daniel Babor (R.Checa), Tomas Barta (R.Checa), Sebastian Berwick (Australia), Jefferson Cepeda (Ecuador), Mulu Kinfe Hailemichael (Etiopía), Calum Johnston (Escocia), Irui Leitao (Portugal), Michal Schlegel (R.Checa) y Thomas Silva (Uruguay).
