Ilia tiene una mentalidad ganadora. Una mentalidad de creer en uno mismo, en su condición, en lo que es capaz de conseguir. Es una cosa en la que coincidimos él y yo. Topuria se visualizaba con el cinturón de la UFC y, en mi caso, cuando subí al podio de París como campeón del Tour de Francia, tenía la misma sensación. Lo visualicé en el pasado. Me siento reflejado en él. Es cierto que muchos más niños además lo visualizan y luego se quedan por el camino, pero para conseguir un objetivo antiguamente tienes que visualizarlo. En Anaheim (Los Ángeles) tuve la oportunidad de estar con su parentela, su equipo, su clan. Presenciar un evento histórico para el deporte castellano. Cuando salió la término de la vedada, bloqueé absolutamente todos mis compromisos para poder estar allí, in situ.
Tengo una gran relación de amistad con Ilia. Empezamos interactuando por redes sociales, seguimos luego en persona en diversos eventos y hasta ahora. No pude estar en su precedente pelea y esta vez no iba a ausentarse. Ahora, no solo estoy enganchando a lo que hace Ilia, que eso ya es poco que venía de detrás, sino además a la UFC y todo lo que rodea a este deporte. Antaño, toda persona que se dedicaba o seguía las artes marciales mixtas conocía a Topuria, sabía de él, de su rendimiento. Hoy en día, tras este cinturón y todo lo que supone, cuando va andando por la calle, creo que no hay nadie que le reconozca, y es que su vida cambió. Mínimo será igual desde que se fue a Los Ángeles a tener aquel duelo contra Alexander Volkanovski. Y, una cosa importante que veo en su postura y su forma de ser es que gestiona acertadamente todo esto. Tiene mucho camino por delante.
